The film initially had Palpatine wielding a different lightsaber in this scene, however.
Palpatine was trained inlightsaber combatby his mentor,Darth Plagueis.
Given Palpatines penchant for manipulation, political leadership positions, and many underlings, this is understandable.
He more than makes up for it with otherForce powers, of course.
In the original Legends continuity, however, Palpatine has a dismissive attitude toward lightsabers in general.
