The Friend
The Friendhas, unfortunately, triggered one of my movie allergies.
Or, rather, causesmeto pushitaway.
But as soon as I come across it, the whole movie starts to feel pretentious or false.
Well, maybe not the whole movie.
If you’re expecting a lot of Bill Murray, temper your expectations to a handful of scenes.
She was his oldest, best, and maybe only friend.
But, to her surprise, he also entrusted her with something more precious before he died.
Iris isn’t a dog person.
Her rent-controlled Manhattan apartment doesn’t even allow dogs.
The Friend follows Iris as she navigates the aftermath of her longtime friend Walter’s sudden death. Left with his unresolved relationships, unfinished literary work, and his large dog, Iris must manage her complicated friendship’s legacy amidst personal and logistical challenges in Manhattan.
That’s not a bad thing to be.
His eyes are just so sad.
And it just isn’t.
Naomi Watts doesn’t get to live in that movie.
